In the organization of the Center of Excellence for Science and Technology STIM as part of the implementation of the STIM-REI project, in the activity IG Design and application of new nanostructured materials in neuro-electronic interfaces for biomedical applications, prof. Damir Kovačić brings us a guest prof. Ph.D. Birger Kollmeier (Medizinische Physik & Cluster of Excellence Hearing4All, Universität Oldenburg & HörTech gGmbH & Fraunhofer IDMT-HSA, Universität Oldenburg, Germany) who gave a lecture at the Faculty of Science in Split entitled:
The German Excellence strategy at work: How the Cluster of Excellence “Hearing4All“ advances Hearing Research, patient treatment, and business development in the “Auditory Valley”
Understanding spoken language is the foundation of our culture. Even a beginning, mild hearing loss has consequences for speech recognition in noise. With increasing hearing loss, suprathreshold distortion effects occur (“Misaudition”) and details in the auditory “internal representation” of the exterior acoustical scene are lost. How can we assess the most important factors of a hearing disorder in an efficient way and which technical possibilities do we have to compensate for a beginning, mild or moderate hearing disorder?
The talk provides an insight into the running research and highlights of the Cluster of Excellence “Hearing4All” (Oldenburg/Hannover) https://hearing4all.de/en/ We cover biophysical foundations of the impaired hearing process via clinical audiological diagnostics and therapy up to assistive hearing systems for daily life.
A focus is laid on the interaction between experiments and hearing theory. Using methods of machine learning and automatic speech recognition helps us to reach a precision diagnosis and to exactly predict the gain in speech recognition achieved by a certain hearing aid supply. Future developments therefore aim at a precise, individualized supply and rehabilitation with hearing devices that are based on the exact prediction of the individual benefit from each device.
We thank our guest and all participants of the quarterly meeting!
